Alessandro Costantino was born in 1970 in Florence, Italy.

He studied painting at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence
He lives and works in Paris since december 2006.

Alessandro Costantino takes expressionism as his starting point, alternating deformed and more realistic figurative representations. His is a bright palette of colours and contrasts.

Apparently uncontrolled brush strokes, sometimes distorted figures, careless drops of paint and insistently warm colour express uneasiness with convention, a methodology for detachment from the conformism of unconsciously absorbed social and cultural norms that restrict and alienate. In Costantino’s world, man has become a continual recitation of the conventional attitudes of everyday social relations, a manifestation of the repression of instinct and a false sense of the self. Free pictorial expression becomes a manifesto for free and instinctive social expression.

This free use of signifiers in combination with such clear chromatic intent is a reflection of Costantino’s need to reject order, a repetitious, unnatural order… the desire to domesticate one’s own existence that by its very nature cannot be domesticated… order and discipline, order of the spirit, a stifling of creativity and imagination…

Distinct series can be distinguished in Costatino’s oeuvre, from dominant figurative colours to a pull towards draftsmanship. In his drawings he achieves increased reflection and calm born out of a kind of intellectual relaxation and the impression of more sincere human relations.

Costantino’s overall vision, however, bears witness to a constant restlessness, a swirl of feeling that finds expression in continually changing designs and contrasts in colour. Rather than repeated reproductions (craftsmanship) that might result in a forced regression of the creative process, Costantino’s painting is a mirror to mood change, emotional disturbance.
